Earlier this spring, the opportunity came to our attention to join Spinzilla for 2014 and we just had to bite. We are so excited to host our inaugural Spinzilla team at A Grand Yarn! What is Spinzilla, you wonder? It is a week long event hosted by The National Needlearts Association Spinning and Weaving Group. From October 6-12th, teams all over the country compete to see who can spin the most yarn. But most importantly it is a chance to build community with other spinners and exercise your spinning skills!
The winning team wins prizes, including the Golden Niddy Noddy and $25 gift certificates for all team members. Any spinner who spins a monster mile (1760y) will also be entered into special drawings and there will be random prizes awarded amongst all participants as well. Spinner registration fees are donated to the Needle Arts Mentoring Program, a program that connects volunteer mentors with programs that teach children the needle arts including crochet, cross-stitch, knitting, needlepoint, and spinning.
Spinner registration opens Aug. 4 at 10am EDT at this link (here) but please note it will not be live until registration opens. You can read more about the event on the Spinzilla page (here). And we will be posting information about our team "training," events, progress, and chatter here and our Facebook page (here) and Ravelry thread (here).
Spinzilla is for everyone--not just experienced spinners! Our team approach is to just have fun. And what better way to really learn, improve, or perfect an aspect of the craft then a week of dedicated time to spin? I am definitely a novice spinner and am very excited to see the range of skill on our team...we've already had interest from experts and newbies near and far. We have new, unique fibers coming in specifically for this event to add some fun interest and incentives for the competition week. So, get those wheels and spindles ready and join us for a fun Spinzilla 2014!
